What Check photos with AI does
Check photos with AI looks at the photos someone added in a Photo step and answers each check you wrote with yes, no, or unsure. For example, at closing: "The front door is closed," "The lights are off," and "The umbrella is folded down."
It's intentionally limited. You write short statements about what should be true, not instructions, and the answer to each is always yes, no, or unsure. Unsure never counts as a pass.
Set it up
- Photos: The Photos from an earlier Photo step in the same workflow. It looks at up to 5.
- Checks: Up to 5. Each check has:
- Should be true: A short sentence describing what the photo should show, up to 120 characters, like "The welcome mat is inside."
- Name: Optional. What later steps call it, like
welcome_mat. If you leave it empty, it's created from the sentence. Once a workflow uses the name, keep it the same, or change it in those steps too.
When you add this step, it comes with three ways out, ready to connect:
- Pass: Every check is a yes.
- Fail: At least one check is a clear no.
- Otherwise: Anything else, like a check that came back unsure, or the step couldn't run.
You can also branch on a single check, like "The door is closed" isn't a yes.
What it saves
Each check is saved as its own value:
data.<step id>.checks.<name>: True for yes, false for no, and empty for unsure.data.<step id>.reasons.<name>: One sentence about what the AI saw.
And for the whole step:
outcome:pass, fail, orunsure. A clear no counts more than an unsure.all_passed: True when every check passed.any_unsure: True when any check came back unsure.failed: The sentences for the checks that failed, for use in a notification, like "Failed: The lights are off."
Write good checks
- Describe what should be true, the way it would look in the photo: "The chairs are up on the tables," not "Check the chairs."
- Use one check for each thing. "The door is closed and the lights are off" should be two checks.
- Ask for photos that show it. Use the Photo step's Instructions to say where to stand.
When it doesn't work
The step fails, and the run takes Otherwise, when:
- There were no photos, or none it could read. iPhone photos in HEIC format are converted to JPEG on the way in when the browser can read them (Safari can). A HEIC photo sent from a browser that can't is skipped.
- Your account has used up its workflow AI allowance for the month.
- The AI didn't answer every check.
The photos are read from your account's own storage and aren't saved anywhere else. Each check uses your monthly workflow AI allowance.
